Alpo Ratia is an independent scholar and translator based in Helsinki. Ratia holds a Cand.phil. degree in Religious Studies from Uppsala University .

He pursued doctoral studies at Hamburg University's Indological Institute and at Delhi University's Department of Buddhist Studies.

His numerous articles in Tibetan, Himalayan and Buddhist studies have appeared in periodicals in Asia and Europe, such as Tibet Journal and Acta Orientalia . He also has various translations to his credit, including the award-winning monograph, Oral Repertoire and World View.

Ratia served as an editor of Ensimmäiset kansat (First Peoples, Turku) quarterly and as a chairperson at the 6th Asia-Europe Peoples' Forum held in Helsinki in September 2006.
